Getting Cheesy: It’s Dairy Month at Cash Saver

June is Dairy Month, which makes it the perfect time to celebrate the everyday dairy products that help make meals easier, tastier, and more affordable. From milk at breakfast to cheese on burgers and yogurt for quick snacks, dairy staples play a role in countless family routines.

At Cash Saver, we know that Memphis families depend on reliable, budget-friendly grocery options, and dairy products are often at the center of the shopping list.

The Everyday Dairy Essentials

Some foods never go out of style, and dairy is full of them. Whether you’re stocking up for the week or grabbing a few basics, these staples are always worth having on hand:

  • Milk for cereal, smoothies, baking, and cooking
  • Cheese for sandwiches, burgers, tacos, and casseroles
  • Yogurt for breakfasts, snacks, and lunchboxes
  • Butter for cooking, baking, and spreading
  • Sour cream for baked potatoes, tacos, and dips
  • Cottage cheese for protein-packed snacks and light meals

These versatile ingredients can stretch across multiple meals, helping you get more value from every grocery trip.

Easy Ways to Use Dairy Throughout the Day

One reason dairy remains a household favorite is its flexibility. It fits naturally into almost every meal:

Breakfast: Yogurt parfaits, scrambled eggs with cheese, oatmeal made with milk, or fruit smoothies.

Lunch: Grilled cheese sandwiches, wraps with shredded cheese, or cottage cheese paired with fresh fruit.

Dinner: Mac and cheese, creamy pasta dishes, casseroles, tacos topped with cheese and sour cream, or mashed potatoes made with butter and milk.

Snacks: Cheese cubes, yogurt cups, or crackers with cheese are quick options for busy days.

Dairy Helps Make Meals Go Further

When grocery budgets are top of mind, dairy products can help create filling meals without adding complexity. A handful of shredded cheese can elevate a simple dinner. Milk can be used in everything from soups to baked goods. Yogurt and cottage cheese offer convenient snack options that don’t require prep work.

Keeping a few dairy staples in the fridge often means you’re only a few ingredients away from a complete meal.

Milk Options

When it comes to milk we don’t just have to choose between 2%, skim or whole milk anymore. Options abound we can go with soy, coconut, cashew, rice, almond or traditional cows milk. This might leave you wondering what kind of milk is best for you and your family? The answer will likely be different for everyone based on your taste preferences, allergies and food sensitivities.

Cows milk alternatives became popular due to the growing number of people desiring a dairy-free milk choice. Almond milk, soy, coconut and rice milk (plus several others) are dairy free. They are also great if you’re vegetarian, vegan or lactose intolerant. However, some cows milk alternatives are lower in protein and higher in sugar, so like any food you purchase that has a label take a look and see what the product is offering. Some of the main things to consider when looking at a milk label are calories, protein and sugar content. Weigh your options and find what works best for you.

Homemade Latte

One of my favorite ways to celebrate Fall is with a warm frothy latte. Once I realized how easy it is to make a latte at home I didn’t feel the need to limit this kind of goodness to a five dollar splurge at the coffee shop. Making your own latte doesn’t require any fancy equipment or milk foaming machines. You can mix up a latte with a jar, a lid and some strong brewed coffee.

Simply brew a strong batch of coffee or expresso beans. I like using a french press or aeropress to ensure the coffee is bold and smooth. Pour 1/4 to 1/2 cup (depending on how strong you prefer your latte) strong brew coffee into your favorite mug. Pour desired amount of milk into a jar. Secure the lid and begin shaking the milk until it’s frothy. It should double in size with about 60 seconds of shaking. Then remove the lid and microwave the milk for 30 seconds. Pour the milk into the espresso, holding back the foam with a spoon. Finally, spoon the foam on top and sprinkle with cinnamon to garnish. Your homemade latte can even be sweetened with honey, vanilla or chocolate. Watch the Clearly Organic blog for a homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte!
